A municipal cultural institution which was founded in 1955 as a trade union establishment, then a culture club of the Nowa Huta steelworks. Since 1995 it has been a local government institution co-financed by the City of Cracow. Its activities are multifunctional and connected with cultural animation and education which are adjusted to the needs of industrial Nowa Huta (5 districts of Cracow - 220.000 inhabitants). Since 1992 it has been working on intensive ecological and environmental education. In 2003 it joined the processes related to revitalization, reinforcement of the social potential and partnership development in the local community. Its employees have university education of different specializations. It manages two libraries, a cinema, two culture clubs, a computer club and a neighbourhood internet network, two European information centres. It also has under its protection some creative groups and supports small social organizations. It is a member of "The Forum for Nowa Huta", an informal partnership group uniting organizations, schools, institutions and local business. In 2003 it achieved a spectacular success in creating the ecological grounds covering the Nowa Huta Meadows (57 hectares). The patron of our institution is Cyprian Kamil Norwid, a Pole - Citizen of the World, the outstanding writer, poet, sculptor and thinker, whose ideas connected with the work ethos and good citizenship society are the ones we try to bring to life.
